60th Anniversary Association of Law Teachers Annual Conference hosted by Strathclyde on 10-11 April 2025

We are delighted to be chosen to host the 60th Anniversary Association of Law Teachers Annual Conference at Strathclyde during our own diamond jubilee academic year. The conference will run both in person and online on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 April 2025.

The ALT is the leading UK-wide organisation for legal education, and supports the development of existing practice in design of teaching and assessment. The 2024 ALT conference at Swansea University set a high bar to match, but it is particularly pleasing to be able to bring the conference to Scotland (recognising that the cancelled 2020 Conference was scheduled to take place at the University of Stirling). Scotland has a proud history of legal education, and we look forward to sharing our experiences and methods with colleagues from the other UK jurisdictions and further afield.

The experience from previous ALT events and conferences has been that of a welcoming community that actively looks to support each other. For most academics, teaching and assessment forms a large part of their workload, and it is vital that platforms such as ALT continue to provide an opportunity for reassurance but also highlight innovation for the benefit of both students and staff. This is particularly important as we face new challenges which include identifying support that students need to succeed on the degree pathway (for example pastoral care provision and equality, diversity and inclusion), Generative AI and the transferable skills that students will need to demonstrate from a law degree whether they choose to enter the legal profession or otherwise.

We are looking forward to welcoming delegates and have ideas to make this as inclusive as possible in making connections in the legal education community. The initial response to the announcement that we are hosting the conference from other academics has been incredibly positive and enthusiastic. In particular we are looking to support Early Career Researchers to gain a foothold in an incredibly supportive and welcoming community of scholars to try and create a long-term impact from the conference.

You can find out more about the conference, together with a call for papers (deadline 13 January 2025), on the dedicated ALT page of our website
