Students from the MSc Diplomacy & International Security programme with course leader, Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro, and German Consul General, Christiane Hullmann
The University of Strathclyde’s MSc Diplomacy and International Security programme was delighted to welcome Christiane Hullmann, the German Consul General in Edinburgh, for an engaging guest lecture and discussion with students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
During her visit, Ms Hullmann shared insights from her distinguished diplomatic career, offering reflections on UK–German relations, European security challenges, and the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering international cooperation. Drawing on her professional experience within the German Foreign Office, she provided first-hand perspectives on how diplomacy functions in practice and the importance of sustained dialogue between nations.
Students were particularly interested in hearing about the day-to-day realities of diplomatic work and the skills required to navigate complex global issues. A lively Q&A session followed the talk, allowing participants to explore topics such as international negotiation, crisis response, and the role of diplomacy in addressing transnational challenges.
Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro, Programme Director for the master’s course, emphasised the value of these guest sessions for students’ professional and academic development:
" When I created the programme, I embedded practitioner engagement sessions as a key component to enhance student learning and experience. Students have enjoyed meeting diplomats from all over the world and gained important insights into the world of diplomacy and security. "
Students described the discussion as both inspiring and informative, noting how Ms Hullmann’s experiences shed light on the skills, adaptability, and commitment required for a successful career in international diplomacy. Read a student's LinkedIn post here.
