Students from the MSc Diplomacy & International Security programme with course leader, Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro, and German Consul General, Christiane Hullmann
Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro recently welcomed Christiane Hullmann, German Consul General in Edinburgh, to deliver a masterclass to students of the MSc Diplomacy & International Security programme. The event featured an engaging discussion on a broad range of topics, including UK-German relations, European security, environmental challenges, and cultural diplomacy.
Christiane Hullmann, who took up the position as Consul General in Edinburgh in July 2023, shared her extensive diplomatic experience, including her tenure as Head of the Western Balkans Division at the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin and her time at the German Embassy in Kyiv. She also reflected on her work in multilateral diplomacy and negotiations during her time as part of the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
Dr Pastor-Castro, the programme's director, highlighted the value of inviting experienced practitioners to provide students with real-world insights, describing practitioner engagement as a vital aspect of the MSc programme. Previous distinguished speakers have included Lord Ricketts, former National Security Advisor and Ambassador to France, and Sir David Omand, former Director of GCHQ.
The Foreign Office has awarded the MSc in Diplomacy and International Security a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship in recognition of its contribution to the Scholarship theme: Strenghtening global peace, security and governance. This multi-disciplinary programme brings together the academic expertise in HaSS Faculty from History, Government & Public Policy, and Law to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of diplomacy and security challenges.
