References tell readers where ideas or quotations from other sources have been used in an assignment.

You should reference:

  • to avoid plagiarism (use someone else's ideas or work without acknowledgment)
  • to show the authority on which you base your arguments
  • to show how widely you have read
  • to enable others to find your sources
