One is the United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship Programme for Human Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World’s Oceans, and the other is the Hamilton Shirley Amerashinghe Memorial Fellowship on the Law of the Sea. Both fellowships attract government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States who wish to advanced research in the field of ocean affairs to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The fellows spend three months at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and then 6 months (July-December) at “prestigious participating host institutions under the guidance of researchers that have “recognized in-depth expertise in the fellows' chosen field of study.”
