Legal researchOur research strategy
The Law School at the University of Strathclyde is committed to advancing the University’s ‘Strathclyde 2030’ vision by conducting cutting-edge research that not only fosters innovation but also addresses pressing societal challenges. Our research strategy is closely aligned with the University’s mission to create a sustainable and inclusive society. We focus on legal issues that impact technological advancement, social justice, and global governance, ensuring our work is both relevant and transformative. By engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration and partnering with government and community stakeholders, we aim to produce impactful research that shapes policy, informs practice, and contributes to building a better future for all.
As a key component of a socially progressive technological university, our research emphasises two overarching themes: the legal dimensions of social justice and the role of law in an increasingly complex technological society. Our vibrant research environment celebrates a diverse range of legal subject areas and methodologies, all aimed at addressing these critical themes. We are committed to cultivating a culture of innovation and inclusivity, where legal scholarship serves as a catalyst for positive societal change.
Our key goals are as follows:
- We prioritise the maintenance and enhancement of our reputation for academic excellence by providing robust support for rigorous research.
- We support staff in realising their research ambitions, fostering a culture of excellence demonstrated through high-quality publications and successful grant capture.
- Our research efforts are also driven by the desire to effect tangible change in society, informing jurisprudence and policy-making, shaping practice, and contributing to public discourse.
- We actively seek opportunities to engage with policymakers, practitioners, civil society organisations, and the general public, ensuring that our research translates into real-world impact.
- Recognising the importance of legal issues to all aspects of society, we actively promote cross-disciplinary collaborations within and beyond our university.
- By drawing attention to the legal dimensions of social justice, and in focusing on the role of law in a technological society, we seek to foster partnerships across disciplines to generate innovative research that addresses complex societal challenges.
- We aim to cultivate an inclusive and supportive research community that provides ample resources, both human and financial, to facilitate the growth of staff at all career stages, from postgraduate researchers to professors.
- Embracing diversity and promoting equality are integral to our research community, and we strive to ensure inclusivity in all aspects of our research activities.
- We aim to attract high quality research students who succeed in finishing their PhDs in a timely manner, feeling properly supported by their supervisors and the wider School. Our PhD students will feel confident about the quality of their work, having developed the necessary expertise and skills to defend their work in a robust manner.
- By the end of their PhDs, students will have developed multiple skills that provide a strong basis for employability within and beyond academia.
