We are Strathclyde - Information for Students

What is it?

‘We are Strathclyde’ intends to aid the transition of new undergraduate students into university life with the goal of improving retention and achievement.

On the course you will:

  • be introduced to academic skills whilst orientating yourself around university life and university services
  • engage in online tasks to help you start to feel like a University of Strathclyde student
  • explore key skills that are necessary for success at university
  • hear authentic student experiences from a diverse range of current Strathclyde students

How does it work?

This non-credit bearing online course will be run over four weeks and is run entirely online, and to get the most out of this course, we would expect you to engage with the course for at least two hours a week.

The course will be run on – Myplace – the university’s website that supports online learning.

The course is designed to fit around the lives of learners, emphasising learning as a social activity, with knowledge shared and developed between students.

We hope the course will support new Strathclyde students in feeling knowledgeable, supported and more confident about embarking upon university life.

What will I learn?

Over the four weeks of the course, you will engage in online activities such as:

  • Zoom Webinars: twice a week, interact with staff at the University
  • Videos: hear from staff & students at the University
  • Quizzes and polls
  • Engage in discussions with staff and other new students and ask the questions that are important to you

Course Structure

Is this suitable for all new students?

The course has been designed specifically for new undergraduate students who are due to commence their studies in Semester 1 in September 2021.

Is this course compulsory?

No, this course has been designed to assist students make the transition to University life. The course will ensure all new students feel knowledgeable, supported and more confident about embarking upon university life.

How long does it last?

The course will last for four weeks.

How long will I need to spend on this course each week?

Two hours per week will be sufficient to engage with the course and its material in a meaningful way.

When does it begin?

The course opens at midday UK time on Monday 16th August 2021. Students can enrol after this date and catch-up.

When does it finish?

Friday 10th September 2021.

What happens if I register late? Can I still take part in the course?

You don’t need to start the course at any particular time or day and you can study each week as and when you’re able (it should take a maximum of two hours), so if you want to join the course please try to do so some time in the first week. Although you will miss out on certain live activities such as the Zoom live sessions, you will be able to watch a recorded version of these after they have taken place.
