Personal statement

Kirsty joined the University of Strathclyde in 2021. Prior to this, she worked as a primary teacher where she developed a particular interest in Early Years and literacy pedagogy. During her time in schools, Kirsty led various change initiatives to support the development of evidence informed and innovative approaches to classroom practice. She also worked in the third sector for over ten years. As part of her role within a local voluntary organisation, Kirsty provided care and support for children and their families, through playful experiences and relational approaches, within their own homes or local communities.

Kirsty’s master’s research explored practitioner understanding of childhood trauma, focusing on the perspectives of staff working across ELC settings and the early stages of primary school. Her current research interests relate to literacy pedagogy, particularly in the Early Years. Kirsty has recently contributed to an evaluation of the Early Years Pedagogue course, working with colleagues to investigate the impact of master’s level learning on the professional experiences and career development of students and graduates working across the Early Years sector.

Kirsty leads and teaches on a range of modules across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study. She currently leads the early level placement modules on the B.A (Hons) Primary Education and PGDE courses. Kirsty also leads various Early Years modules on the BA Childhood Practice and Early Years Pedagogue programmes. She is a member of the teaching teams on undergraduate literacy modules designed to support preservice teachers’ developing understandings of literacy pedagogy and practice.

Kirsty supports various widening access initiatives as part of her role at the university. She participates in the ‘Strathclyde Cares’ programme, helping care experienced students during their time at university through the associated mentoring programme. Kirsty is also involved in the ‘Young Strathclyder’ Accelerate and Primary programmes, working with primary and secondary pupils as they engage in a range of learning experiences and grow in confidence within the university learning environment.
