Personal statement
I work in a variety of areas of atomic physics, focusing in particular on ultracold atomic systems and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), but also covering four-wave mixing in atomic vapours. Recent work in our labs on microfabricated atom traps was published as the May 2013 cover story of Nature Nanotechnology.
My DPhil at the University of Sussex led to the first BEC in the UK in 1998. The first Scottish BEC was made in my lab in 2003, and the same experiment was extended to create one of the world’s first magnetic storage rings for BECs, and high-contrast matter-wave interference.
In addition to my experimental work, I have published on theoretical projects both as sole author and collaboratively.
My undergraduate studies (BSc(Hons) in Mathematics, and MSc in Physics) were carried out at the University of Otago in my hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand.
