Personal statement

I am currently employed as a Research Associate at the University of Strathclyde in the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. I have held three previous postdoctoral positions in Heriot-Watt University, the University of Bristol and Durham University. My current research at the University of Strathclyde is concerned with providing tools for the automated analysis of video footage recorded during scheduled outages of the seven advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations within the United Kingdom. My research interests include Image/Signal Processing, Machine Learning and computer vision.

I graduated from my undergraduate degree in Applied Physics at the University of Limerick with first class honours in 2007. I received my PhD in Applied Mathematical Modelling also in the University of Limerick in January 2012.

My research to date includes a diverse range of problems including automated detection of threat items in 2D X-ray imagery, the design and construction of an augmented SVM classifier to provide confidence metrics for any decision made in the automated detection of naval mines in SONAR imagery and the calculation of displacements of railway tracks from noisy accelerometer data.
