Personal statement

Known as "Dr Mohamed Elsayed Elawady", "Dr Mohamed Soliman".

Dr Mohamed Elawady is a teaching fellow in the department of computer and information sciences at the University of Strathclyde. He received his joint Master of Science degree in computer vision and robotics from the following universities under the EU Erasmus Mundus programme: Heriot-Watt University (UK), Burgundy University (France), Girona University (Spain), and his PhD in computer vision from Lyon University (France).

Before joining Strathclyde, he worked as a lecturer in data science at the University of Stirling, and a computer vision researcher in the industry, as part of a Parisian start-up (later acquired by a +2B unicorn company), managing successful proof-of-concept projects using deep learning approaches with European technology partners (Pricer, Metralabs) and worldwide retail clients (Carrefour, MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group).

His research expertise involves image analysis, robotics vision, information retrieval and medical imaging. He has published highly cited papers in top computer vision conferences (i.e., ICCV, ACVIS, CAIP, VCIP) on the topics of symmetry detection, breast ultrasound segmentation and learning-based compression using the methods of feature extraction (conventional using wavelets & deep using CNNs), data clustering (linear-directional density estimation) and data classification (SVM). Dr Mohamed was a Co-I on an industrial project for food waste management using computer vision algorithms funded by the UK Industry scheme (Falcon Foodservice Equipment). He serves as a reviewer for several journals and conferences in the computer vision field. His main research findings have shown strong knowledge of image analysis through winning a worldwide ICCV’17 competition in symmetry detection.

Dr Elawady is actively looking for excellent candidates interested in PhD, internship, MSc and Honors projects. Reach me for further project details. Inside primary supervisor section of PGR applications, my name is listed as "Dr Mohamed Soliman".
