Personal statement

In August 2012, Lynne joined SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages based at the University of Strathclyde initially on secondment as a Professional Development Officer.  Prior to this, she worked as a primary teacher at schools in West Lothian Council and Dundee City Council for over 13 years, with a whole school and cluster remits for the teaching and learning of modern languages throughout.

In her current role at SCILT, Lynne facilitates a variety of professional learning opportunities for pre-service and in-service primary teachers around early languages education policy and pedagogy.  She has a particular interest in the use of film and visual texts to support the learning and teaching of languages and intercultural awareness.  Lynne was Pedagogy Lead (2019-2022) and Pedagogy Tutor (2017-2023) onTeachers Learning to Teach Languages in Primary School (TeLT) programme, a blended programme combining language upskilling and primary languages pedagogy run in partnership between Open University and SCILT.

Lynne's current responsibilities include: member of Languages Week Scotland strategy team, a national week of celebration and advocacy; SCILT lead on Scotland's Languages Leadership Programme team; editorial team for the Scottish Languages Review online journal.

Lynne is a Critical Friend on the Educator's Leading Practice through Enquiry programme, run by Education Scotland's Professional Learning and Leadership (EdScotPLL) Team.  Previously, between 2017 - 2023 she held various support roles on the Teacher Leadership and Educator Leadership Programmes also run by the EdScotPLL Team.

Lynne currently holds Professional Recognition: Supporting Teacher Learning from the General Teaching Council Scotland.

1998 PGCE (Primary Education) with Merit from the University of Paisley

1994 BA (Hons) 2i French and Spanish from the University of Stirling

Research Interests

Research interests include learner voice, teacher learning and practitioner enquiry.  Lynne's Masters dissertation explored the professional learning experiences of primary and secondary teachers of modern languages in one local authority in Scotland.

Presently working on her EdD thesis, Lynne is using collaborative digital, visual and mobile methods to explore how teacher leadership is understood and experienced in Scotland.
