Personal statement

Professor Kumar has had a distinguished and extensive career in the field of computer-based design and construction research. He initiated his research journey with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence applications in Structural Design from Edinburgh University in the 1980s and has maintained a dedicated focus on this thematic area throughout his career. Over the years, he has established significant collaborations with leading research centers worldwide, including Stanford and Carnegie-Mellon Universities in the USA, NUS (Singapore), and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

As a mentor and academic leader, Professor Kumar has successfully supervised over 25 Ph.D. students as a principal supervisor. His contributions to the field are evident in his prolific publication record, with extensive contributions to leading journals and conferences. Additionally, he has authored three books, edited around a dozen volumes, and published over 150 articles in major international outlets.

Professor Kumar has led several cross-disciplinary projects funded by prestigious organizations such as EPSRC, Innovate UK, Royal Academy of Engineering, IOSH, HSE, and the EU. Additionally, he has led knowledge transfer and consultancy projects for several major organisations like NHS Scotland, Scottish Futures Trust, HS2, IES and Morgan Sindall. His commitment to research, mentorship, and collaborative projects underscores his significant impact on advancing the understanding and application of artificial intelligence in structural design and related fields.
