Personal statement

I began my career at the University of Strathclyde in 2021 at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences through a Laboratory Technical Apprenticeship, which gave me a solid foundation in technical skills and practical experience within an academic environment. Since then, I’ve progressed into my current role as a Laboratory Technician, where I support undergraduate teaching, prepare practical sessions, and help maintain a safe and well-organised lab environment. I have developed strong technical expertise in microbiological culturing techniques, including aseptic handling, preparation of selective and differential media, and the cultivation and maintenance of bacterial and fungal species. My experience extends to supporting teaching labs that involve microbial identification and characterisation, helping students understand both classical and modern microbiological methods. In addition to microbiology, I have hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, particularly DNA extraction, amplification through PCR, and gel electrophoresis. I am confident in assisting with DNA-based experiments and troubleshooting protocols where required, ensuring smooth lab delivery and providing guidance to students as they build confidence in these essential techniques. I ensure students have a positive and engaging experience during practical classes and that each practical session runs efficiently and that students have access to high-quality technical support. I enjoy contributing to their learning by helping them build confidence in core laboratory techniques. With a hands-on background and a commitment to continuous learning, I’m passionate about supporting both staff and students, and I aim to keep developing professionally within the field of higher education and technical services.
