Personal statement
Ali Mehmanparast is a Professor of Structural Integrity at the University of Strathclyde. He has been the Manager and Co-Investigator of the Cranfield-Oxford-Strathclyde Universities Renewable Energy Marine Structures (REMS) Centre for Doctoral Training since the beginning of the programme in 2014.
Prof. Mehmanparast received his MEng degree in 2008 and PhD degree in 2012, both from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College London. He also holds an MBA degree from Cranfield University. Prior to joining the University of Strathclyde in 2022, he worked at Imperial College London and Cranfield University as a Research Associate, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader between 2012 and 2021. He is a Chartered Engineer of IMechE, Chartered Manager and Fellow of CMI, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is on Editorial Board of four international journals of "Materials at High Temperatures", "Journal of Multiscale Modelling", "Wind" and "Material Design & Processing Communications". He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and book chapters in the field of engineering structural integrity and has chaired technical sessions at international conferences.
Research interests
Prof. Mehmanparast's research is mainly focussed on the design optimisation, life extension and integrity assessment of Offshore Wind Turbines. Some examples of the past/current research projects that he has led as the PI are:
-Offshore wind turbine foundation flange study (Carbon Trust OWA Programme)
-Structural design and integrity enhancement of floating offshore support structures (Supergen Wind Hub)
-Corrosion and fatigue protection of offshore wind turbine structures using additive manufacturing technology (Supergen ORE Hub)
-Assessment of crack arrest behaviour in modern structural steels (EPSRC iCASE, TWI and Lloyd’s Register)
-Residual stress effects on fatigue life assessment of Offshore Wind Turbines (STFC)
