Personal statement

I am a sociologist committed to understanding and addressing the social dynamics that shape health, well-being, and social justice. I hold a PhD in Sociology from Queen’s University of Belfast and began my academic journey at Universidad del Valle in Colombia, where I gained foundational experience in social research and interdisciplinary approaches to public health. My teaching and research have developed in disciplines such as sociology, public policy, and public health, with a focus on socialization, sexuality, pregnancy and parenthood in young people, sexual diversity, and gender equality. In my research, I have participated in projects aiming to contribute to the fields of sexual and reproductive rights, public health, and well-being. My scholarly output includes traditional academic formats as well as other types of community-based co-production. I have had the opportunity to hold leadership and managerial roles. As Director of the Research, Innovation, and Development Office, and later as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, I was responsible for guiding academic strategy, fostering research excellence, and driving innovation in social sciences education. I have assumed these experiences from a service-based approach. Since joining the University of Strathclyde, I have been excited to bring my experiences and interests in sociology, public health, and interdisciplinarity to the Department of Social Work and Social Policy. As a Teaching Associate, I am deeply committed to contributing to the B.A. in Education and Social Services, where I am part of a team supporting the development of future professionals aiming to tackle complex social issues with a strong foundation in social science research and practice. I am passionate about being part of an inclusive learning environment that encourages critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, respect, and a commitment to social justice.
