Graduate Apprenticeship Q & A with Cameron Mair

IT: Software Development Graduate Apprentice

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why did you choose the ITSD Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) at Strathclyde?

I’m Cameron an 18 year old Graduate apprentice studying at Strathclyde. I chose to study on the ITSD GA course because I felt it was the perfect balance of learning and gaining hands on experience in one program.

What skills are you developing throughout your GA that helps you in your career?

I am developing both technical skills and development techniques on the course. Improving my knowledge in both these areas helps me contribute to tasks at work. For example, the work I am currently completing in my “introduction to software engineering” module covers agile techniques that I actively utilise in my work. Learning about these techniques has allowed me to better understand and apply the processes to real life situations.

Can you tell us the benefits from studying the GA and the challenges you have faced, and how you overcame these challenges?

It is undeniably tough having work during the day and study at night. However, I find allocating time for uni work in my day really helps with this. I now find that I manage my workload much better overall. The main benefit I would say is gaining lots of software development experience; as well as getting the best bits uni life.

Any advice you have for those considering a Graduate Apprenticeship?

My advice to anyone considering a GA would be to grab the opportunity with both hands. In my personal experience, I get an immense amount of fulfilment from the work I do.

Cameron is in first year of his GA and works for JWF.
