Why this course?

The Strathclyde Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship is a flexible BSc (Hons) programme supporting the development of future digital and technology solutions professionals and enhancing the expertise of the employee for the organisation.

The course allows for apprentices to undertake one of four specialisms:

  • IT Consultant
  • Business Analyst
  • Cyber Security Specialist
  • Software Engineer

The programme and curriculum have been developed to align with the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education: Digital and Technology Solutions Professional (Level 6) standard and seek to also gain relevant professional accreditation for those participants satisfying wider practice-based requirements.

Add value to your organisation

We focus on developing your workforce so that they can quickly add value to your organisation. We start with the fundamentals, providing a solid foundation for future learning and helping apprentices become productive.

The course content has been developed in partnership with industry and is designed to equip apprentices with knowledge of contemporary tools and technology. We don’t just focus on tech – our approach to work-based learning helps develop more rounded professionals, with a wide range of soft skills that enable apprentices to contribute widely to your organisation.

A flexible delivery model ensures minimal time away from the workplace, utilising a combination of online learning supported by a series of online tutorials, an annual face-to-face on-campus workshop and work-based learning activity.

Hear from our people

Find out more about the course from Dr James Nightingale, Programme Leader and Helyn Gould, Deputy Associate Principal.

Work-based learning is at the absolute heart of our programs to allow our apprentices to immediately put into practice, and to see in action, the theoretical content of their degree programme.

Course structure

The Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship has been developed by our Department of Computer and Information Sciences and Strathclyde Business School to meet both the business and technology requirements of organisations as well as achieve the outcomes of the apprenticeship standard.

The programme is three years of study plus a final work-based project year. The work-based project will be a ‘live project’ within your organisation which benefits both your organisation and your apprentice.

Blended learning delivery

All our apprenticeship degree programmes are delivered through a blended learning format. Degree Apprentices will have access to our award-winning digital platform and will access course materials via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Myplace.

Work-based learning

An integral part of a Degree Apprenticeship is the Work-Based Learning elements which Degree Apprentices complete in the workplace throughout their studies. Experiential learning also provides value for employers who are asked to identify appropriate work-based activities for the Degree Apprentice to complete. As well as technical skills, these include opportunities to practice general business skills, such as communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement.

All Degree Apprentices are supported by a Work-Based Learning Advisor employed by the University to support and guide them through their programme and to build a portfolio of evidence for Professional registration. Apprentices are also assisted in developing skills in personal analysis and objective setting, allowing them to actively manage their careers and further deliver value to the workplace.

Off the job training

There is a requirement that Degree Apprentices will dedicate 20% of their time to the programme which is officially known as ‘off-the-job training’. This is time spent developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours to satisfy the programme requirements.

This time is made up of activities including academic study, workplace projects, work shadowing which will allow the acquisition and application of new learning that enables your apprentice(s) to complete the programme. These activities should be naturally occurring and not manufactured to satisfy the programme requirements.

Entry requirements

Whilst we take a flexible admissions approach with entry requirements, for the Digital and Technology Solutions BSc we normally require 3 A-levels (including Mathematics) or equivalent. However, each application will be considered on an individual basis with input from employers.

Funding

Degree Apprenticeships are funded by the Education Skills Funding Agency.
