Researcher developmentManaging Your PhD

Once you know which areas you'll focus on, you can consider the development activities you might undertake to expand your skills and experience.

The University offers a comprehensive range of courses, through the Researcher Development Programme, to support postgraduate researchers on their journey to success. You can sign up for our "Planning Your Professional Development Workshop" which will help you on your way!

Attending courses is not the only way to view your professional development. Many of the activities are things you'll naturally do in the course of your research project, while others may require you to actively take part in training or new activities. These activities all contribute to your development and you should consider them as you complete the assessment requirements for the PGCert in Researcher Professional Development*.

*The following degree programmes are exempt from the PGCert in Researcher Professional Development requirements:

  • EngD
  • EdD
  • DEdPsy
  • DBA
  • MRes

In addition, all doctoral students in Strathclyde Business School, and students within a Research Council Centre for Doctoral Training (including DTC, IDC, DTP or BGP), are exempt as they have their own credit requirements).
