Project Details

You will be joining a network of researchers at the University of Strathclyde and the University of Waterloo, Canada. We are investigating the steel industry and the potential for hydrogen furnaces to contribute to decarbonisation and sustainable transition of the sector.

We have secured competitive funding to support an MPhil student starting in September 2022 for one year. The student will be provided with a bursary of £10,800 and home fees will be covered. There is additional funding available to support a research visit to Waterloo.

The research will identify key gaps, barriers, and priorities for further research in the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing the steel industry, both upstream and downstream in Scotland and Ontario.

The student would be expected to conduct interviews with various businesses and stakeholders to develop a deep understanding of the barriers and drivers of technology transition to inform a policy-facing model of the decision ecosystem.

The opportunity will be particularly attractive to individuals looking to develop independent research skills, experience applied cross-disciplinary and international research, and grow deep insights in industrial decarbonisation, technology transition, and policy innovation.

The Strathclyde research team is a collaboration between Civil and Environmental Engineering, Management Science and the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS).
