Project Details

This research investigates the macroeconomic implications of adopting hydrogen as an aviation fuel within Scotland’s aviation sector, focusing on its role in achieving net-zero emissions, the impacts for rural/island aviation (and linked airports in urban settings) and the macroeconomic impacts at a range of scales, including UK, Scotland and within local communities. Hydrogen is widely regarded as a promising alternative to conventional jet fuel due to its potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, its integration into aviation requires substantial infrastructure investment, supply chain development, and regulatory adaptation, all having macroeconomic consequences for regional and national stakeholders.

The study will assess direct, indirect and induced macroeconomic impacts, such as job creation throughout the economy (including in hydrogen production and distribution), effects on airport operations, and opportunities for Scotland’s renewable energy sector to supply green hydrogen. It will also explore potential cost trajectories for hydrogen fuel compared to sustainable aviation fuels and electrification, considering factors such as, cost implications for economy wide impacts and policy incentives.

By combining macroeconomic modelling with technoeconomic and social science methods, the research aims to provide a holistic view of how hydrogen adoption could influence Scotland’s aviation economy, regional competitiveness, and contribution to the UK’s net zero aviation goals, while delivering socio-economic benefits across rural areas and connected airport infrastructures in urban centres. The findings will inform policymakers, industry decision makers, and academics on the socio-economic trade-offs and benefits of hydrogen-powered aviation, supporting evidence-based decisions for sustainable growth and decarbonisation. The research will also be conducted through engagement with various local government (island councils), industry (SSE, Glasgow Airport) and community stakeholders (Voluntary Action Shetland, Community Energy Scotland) utilising existing and new relationships with relevant, place-based organisations.

The project forms part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Net Zero Aviation, offering an integrated, multidisciplinary training programme focused on innovation, collaboration, and inclusive leadership. As part of an annual cohort, you’ll benefit from world-class training facilities across various universities and industrial settings, engaging with experts and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. Based at the University of Strathclyde, a leading international technological university for impactful research, the project will leverage the commercial partner’s expertise in HVDC aircraft electrical technologies.

There is a two-stage interview process. First interviews are scheduled to be on Monday 17 August and second interviews on Friday 21 August.

Funding details

This is an EPSRC CDT in Net Zero Aviation Project. The generous funding package includes full tuition fees for home students and an enhanced stipend. For 2026/27 the stipend amount will be £25,183. Additional support is available for conference attendance, specialised training, travel to industrial partners, and extended placements with industry collaborators.
