Summer Opportunities FAQs

  • Summer Schools
  • Volunteering
  • Research Placements
  • Work Abroad

You can go at any point in your degree from summer commencing your first year, to the summer just after you graduate.

Previous destinations include:

  • Spain
  • France
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Denmark
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Fiji
  • Bali

Summer Schools

  • Typically between 1-8 weeks
  • Turing Funded Summer Schools need to be 2 weeks or longer

Research Placements

  • Typically 8-12 weeks

Volunteering

  • Typically 1-8 weeks
  • Turing Funded Volunteering programmes need to be 2 weeks or longer

  • Gain international experience
  • Boost career prospects and CV
  • Improve academic, social and personal skills
  • Broaden your horizon and global perspective
  • Often a cheaper option in comparison to a study exchange
  • Flexibility with when you can go during your degree

These opportunities do not require you to gain credits to contribute to your degree, so you are able to choose an opportunity that is either related or unrelated to your degree. This means you have the option of whether to study or do an internship in something that you are interested in that is related to your degree such as a research internship, or a completely new opportunity like a language/cultural course.

The cost varies depending on destination and duration of the programme. Certain programmes can be all inclusive, while others require separate fees. Costs can include:

  • Tuition/programme fee (if this is a partner university, it can sometimes be waived)
  • Accommodation fee
  • Transport
  • Visa
  • Meals
  • Travel and socialising
  • Vaccines (depending on destination)

Generally speaking, summer opportunities can be cheaper than a study exchange.

The Turing Funding Scheme has helped many students go on summer opportunities in previous years. The number of places available through the scheme changes on an annual basis, depending on the amount of funding available. You can view Turing funded places on a yearly basis on our Strathclyde Summer Abroad MyPlace page.

Alumni Funding grants may also be available. Please contact us to find out more.

I will truly never forget this trip. It has made me so much more confident in myself. I pushed myself so far out of my comfort zone, and it has taught me that taking risks like this is truly worth it.
