Would you recommend this summer programme?

Absolutely, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Fully immersing myself in the culture by living in the village was absolutely incredible.

You become so close with your host family, and I have made several life-long friendships amongst the volunteers. It also taught me so much about cultural differences in mental health and how to teach amidst language barriers and taboo culture.

What activities were organised by your programme? Did one in particular stand out as your favourite?

We had an outing every Saturday. One included a picnic/BBQ on a beach, and another was going to a nearby sports ground and playing volleyball/netball with the youth and kids from our village.

The standout trip was going to a waterfall in Colo i Suva Forest Park.

What is your favourite memory of your summer programme?

Our last night was my favourite.

Although there were lots of tears as we were sad to leave, the whole village and volunteers had dinner together in the village hall, we then performed a traditional dance which we had spent 4 days learning and finally had something called hop-hop! Some did an all nighter dancing and spending time with each other for the last time and it was truly touching and full of laughter.

How has this summer programme impacted your life?

I will truly never forget this trip. It has made me so much more confident in myself. I pushed myself so far out of my comfort zone, and it has taught me that taking risks like this is truly worth it.

I have also gained a whole family through the Fijians (who I remain in contact with) and the volunteers, whom I will see in November! Additionally, it has taught me valuable skills about mental health, teaching in different cultures and has provided a great experience for my professional future.
