Community Engagement & Glasgow's Children's University

Project overview

As a socially progressive institution, Strathclyde seeks to provide opportunities for children and young people from a diverse range of backgrounds and to offer routes to education for those most disadvantaged.

This VIP4SD project will seek to create an institutional digital repository - a digital compendium - of all the University’s public and community engagement.  Alongside this there will be an externally facing option and app which will allow our public stakeholders to search and participate in activities offered.

In supporting our wide range of outreach projects. which includes the award-winning, Children's University, this VIP4SD project’s primary SDG of focus is SDG 4, Quality Education, and specifically its targets on equal access, inclusion and elimination of discrimination.

This VIP4SD project will help to ensure that we track our provision effectively and are able to identify any gaps in our provision and will directly feed into the University’s Strategic Plan.

This VIP4SD project seeks to do this through the development of a web-based tool for the collation, co-ordination and promotion of credit-bearing (and outreach) activities, that can be drawn together from learning activities across the University (and potentially beyond) to service our Glasgow Children’s University curricula and other projects. This web-based tool will act as a portal to an interactive digital repository to capture and share relevant content that can be made available across Strathclyde’s learning destinations with the potential to expand to external and national ones.

What will students be doing

Education and Management Science students will be required to produce a design brief for this digital repository. This will involve working with academics and other members of the outreach and community engagement network to understand the educational requirements of the stakeholders that this tool will serve, and how this influences the user requirements for the tool, and ultimately the required functionality and ‘look and feel’ of the tool.

CIS students will be required to develop the tool based on the design brief of the Education students (and academic staff). This will require database design, implementation of client/server applications, mobile app development, GUI design, Data processing functionality and visualisation (and potentially development of intelligent search functionality).
