Four Strathclyders have been appointed to help deliver an expanded definition of research excellence.

This is to support the recognition of the wide range of research, roles and people.

The appointments form part of Research Excellence Framework (REF) People, Culture and Environment (PCE) pilot panels. This pilot builds on the findings of the PCE indicators project to evaluate the feasibility of submitting and assessing various elements of PCE for potential inclusion in REF 2029.

This work will help refine the indicators and metrics used in these assessments, ensuring they reflect the evolving priorities of the research sector.

The Strathclyders selected for the panels are:

  • Professor Anne Marie Doherty, Department of Marketing, UoA 17 – Business and Management Studies
  • Professor Churnjeet Mahn, Department of Humanities and Deputy Associate Principal (Research and Knowledge Exchange), UoA 28 – History
  • Professor Karen Boyle, Head of Department of Humanities, UoA 33 – Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts, Film and Screen Studies
  • Professor Fiona Henriquez-Mui, Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UoA 7.

The University’s REF Academic Lead, Professor Paul McKenna said: “I am delighted that four of our colleagues are making vital contributions to shaping the People, Culture, and Environment element of REF 2029, through their appointment to the PCE pilot panels. Their involvement reflects their significant expertise, experience and commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive research community.

At Strathclyde, we are deeply committed to supporting the growth of our research community and strengthening our distinctive research culture and environment. Through our Strathclyde 2030 Strategy and People Strategy, we seek to enable every member of our research community to deliver world-class research and innovation, driving transformative impact across diverse fields.

The experience and feedback of the panels will be included in the final report on the pilot exercise, which will inform the REF 2029 guidance on PCE.
