Sustainable StrathclydeWaste & recycling

The University of Strathclyde is committed to minimising waste, and recycling as many materials as possible produced by our activities.

Recycling

Staff and students should segregate all waste and recyclables e.g. food waste, paper, plastic bottles, cans, glass, and general non-recyclables. We provide centralised recycling bins throughout the buildings.

New dry mixed recycling bins have been installed in the Learning and Teaching building, to make it easier for all staff and students to recycle their waste. The aim is to simplify recycling at Strathclyde and make it easier to recycle around campus. The Recycling Guide contains information on what goes into each bin.

Collection

The University's cleaning and light duty staff monitor recycling stations on a daily basis. They transfer the contents to external 1100L containers where it's collected by the University waste management contractor Enva.

Staff disposing material directly in the 1100L containers must ensure materials are appropriately segregated and disposed of in clear plastic bags. For mixed recycling no black bags are to be used, and no loose items placed in bins. All recyclables have to be bagged, and cardboard flattened down.

Confidential waste

Many departments have a need for the removal and guaranteed secure destruction of confidential waste materials. This may include examination papers/scripts or personnel records. Please use the shredders installed in certain areas/departments or employ an outside Service Provider.
