This exhibition of 10 paintings of oil and acrylic on canvas each celebrates the role of Black African women as custodians of a vibrant culture and their efforts in preserving the beauty of diverse African cultures from clothing, artefacts, basketry and more. The throughline is the traditional attire worn by women across different regions of Africa.
The series rewrites the narrative of the traditionally attired African woman as a historically remote or distant figure, and places her within the present day, as a key part of our modern world. It showcases that the modern woman can both embrace her traditional identity and simultaneously play an active role in the modern world, thereby preserving it for future generations. That the modern woman and the one who celebrates her colourful culture are not mutually exclusive
