BrandingCreating a social media channel

Getting started

Things to consider

Before creating a social media account, consider your audience and goals.

Social media requires continuous management, including regular updates with engaging images and videos to capture attention and keep your audience engaged.

You should think through the following:

  • what is the purpose of this channel?
  • who is the target audience, and how will they engage with the content?
  • do you have the time and resources to maintain the account long-term?

Do you really need a social media account?

The most important thing to consider before getting started is whether or not you need an account.

If your content is for a one-off event (for example, a conference) or a short-term project (less than a year), using an existing University account, such as central or department account(s) may be a better option. These established channels already have an engaged audience which will immediately increase your reach.

You can also collaborate with colleagues to share, like, and comment on posts to boost visibility.

Choosing the right platform

Choosing the right platform depends on who you want to reach and what you want to achieve. Consider:

  • who is your audience? Which platforms do they actively use?
  • what is your goal? Are you looking to engage with industry professionals, prospective students, or staff?
  • how will you keep content engaging? Social media should not be used as a noticeboard, it requires visual, interactive, and engaging content

LinkedIn and X (Twitter)

These platforms are best for engaging with industry professionals, sharing research, and professional networking.

Instagram & TikTok

Stronger for visual storytelling and brand awareness, particularly among prospective students.

Facebook

Generally less effective for student engagement but may work for certain communities.

Channel management

Appoint a social media manager

Managing social media accounts requires time and dedication. You should appoint an account manager with the skills, time, and interest to manage the account.

Use a communal email address

Use a communal email address that multiple team members have access to. This ensures that, if someone leaves the University, the account is still accessible.
