BrandingCreating content for social media

The content you create for social media will depend on which channel you're creating for. Different platforms have different audiences, and it's important to tailor your content accordingly.

Platforms and audiences

Facebook Facebook should be used for community updates, events, news and the student experience
X Use X for University news, and engagement in online conversations
Instagram Instagram to showcase student life, share user-generated content, and reels
LinkedIn LinkedIn is where we share research, academic news, and professional networking
TikTok TikTok is for sharing engaging, authentic content that showcases campus life and academic opportunities

Social media strategy

Creating a social media strategy helps you achieve your goals and ensures content is aligned with the University's objectives.

Consider the following when developing your strategy:

Goal

What’s the purpose of your social media presence?

Audience

Who are you trying to reach, and which platforms do they use?

Content sources

Where will you get content? Will you use internal resources, user-generated content, or something else?

Content types

Will you post images, videos, articles, or links?

Management

Who will manage the account? Who’s the backup?

Cadence

How often will you post?

Voice

What tone will you use? Will your account be formal, informal, or somewhere in between?

Success metrics

How will you measure success? Engagement, reach, conversions?

Best practice for content creation

It's important to make sure your content is relevant, of a high enough quality, and is appropriate for the platform you're posting on.

Images and video

High-quality photography and videos perform better on social media than text-based images or graphics.

Workshops

The Apple Store in Glasgow regularly runs Photography and Video on iPhone workshops which are worthwhile attending if you're using an iPhone.

Video guidelines

We have detailed video guidelines available to help guide you through the process of creating video content.

Strathclyde Hashtags and GIFS

Branding

End graphics

If you're posting videos/reels, and you want to brand your content, you have the option of tailing your videos with these University branded end graphics, where appropriate. We have two available:

Lower thirds

If you're adding names and titles to your video, where possible, please use the following photoshop file to lay your text over:

Font

The University's digital font is Alegreya Sans and is available to download for free from Google. This font should be used where possible.

  • use regular for paragraph text in captioning
  • use extra bold for names
  • use bold for titles

If it's not possible to use this font, stick to a 'classic' font instead.

Copyright

Only use images or videos you own or have permission to use.

Consent

You can find detailed information on consent on our video guidelines.

AI Content

While Gen-AI tools can help generate content quickly, it’s very obvious when AI-generated content isn’t adapted. Always review and adapt AI outputs before posting as unedited AI content can often lack nuance, focus, or even factual correctness, so it’s important to tailor it for your audience and the platform.

Safety and privacy

You are personally responsible for the content you post. Always ensure your posts comply with university guidelines and privacy regulations.
