Managing Talent & Succession Planning

This class provides an introduction to the dynamic field of Talent Identification/Sourcing, Talent Management, Talent Development and Succession Planning with a focus on both strategic and operational management concerns. Given the global challenge for MNCs and, increasingly, public bodies in identifying, recruiting and retaining ‘the best’ in human resource terms, this class will focus on the emerging “global war for talent” which is recognised as one of the main resource battlegrounds in the competitive business environment of the future. What this class will seek to address are a range of inter-related themes and issues centred on the concept of ‘talent’ – What are the talents that we require? Who are the ‘talented’? How do we source them? How do we develop them? How do we retain them and provide opportunities that meet their aspirations? How to we manage ‘talent’? How do we motivate those employees who are not labelled as part of the talent community?

The class will combine broad strategic talent themes with a practical approach to the management and development of talented or high potential employees within an organisational setting.

The class will encourage the development of a critical view of Talent Management theory and practice to develop capabilities as professional managers who are able to think critically about Managing Talent and are, therefore, better problem-solvers and decision-makers in this key area.
