Undergraduate admissions - mature students

We're keen to encourage those who did not have the opportunity to progress to Higher Education when they left high school and after substantial life/work experience decide to continue with their education. You should have evidence of recent academic study at a level that prepares you for degree level study but we can be flexible with the qualifications we accept.

SQA Highers

We recommend at least three and you should include English. If you're intending to apply for BA Accounting, you must include mathematics and for Masters in International Business & Modern Languages, you must include the language you intend to study. If your application is successful, you could be made a conditional offer for three grades at ABB.

SQA Advanced Highers or GCE A-levels

If you have Higher passes from several years ago, you may wish to update your qualifications by taking Advanced Highers or A-levels. In this case you should take subjects which will help prepare you for University study. We recommend you include at least one social science subject eg history, modern studies. If your application is successful you could be made a conditional offer for two B grades. If you need to take either of the additional Highers (below) a conditional offer would include a pass at B.

If you're applying for BA Accounting, a previous pass in Higher Mathematics at grade A is required. If you do not have this you'll need to either include Advanced Higher or A-level Mathematics or take Higher Mathematics in addition to the two Advanced Highers or A-levels.

If you're applying for Masters in International Business & Modern Languages, a recent pass at B at Higher in the language you wish to study is required. If you do not have this you'll need either include Advanced Higher or A-level in the language or take a Higher in addition to the two Advanced Highers or A-levels.

Pre-entry Certificate

The Department of Lifelong Learning in the University run a part-time pre-entry certificate. This course runs one evening in September of each year and running though to June. Students who attain an overall score of 60% on the final assessment, and pass the Business module at least at 65% will be considered for a place on the BA in Business subject to receipt of a successful UCAS application.

To be considered for entry to the BA Accounting students must arrange to study for SQA Higher Mathematics1 and will be asked for a pass at grade B.

To be considered for entry to the Master in International Business & Modern Languages (IBML), students must arrange to study for an SQA Higher1 in the language they wish to take in the Master in IBML and will be asked for a pass at grade B.

Further information on the pre-entry course.

A similar course is offered at Glasgow University by DACE. Students who pass this course at BBCC can be made an offer for the BA degree programme. If you intend to apply to BA Accounting or BA IBML, you'll need the additional Higher pass. For further details of this course contact DACE at Glasgow University.

HNC/HND

Applications are considered on an individual basis. Passes at A in all graded units are required. Where possible, successful HND applicants may be considered for entry into second year of the degree programme with subjects restricted to those studied in sufficient depth within the HND. The HND modules will be evaluated from the information given on the UCAS application and applicants will be advised of their options along with their offer.

Open University credits

For entry to the BA in Business, we will consider 60 points of relevant Open University Undergraduate course credits at Level 1 or higher.

Enquiries about availability of evening courses in SQA Highers can be made at your local further education college.
