MSc Forensic ScienceNandana Githesh
Nandana is a MSc Forensic Science graduate from India. She now works as a Production Chemist at Chemify in Glasgow, where she manages daily chemical production, performs quality control checks, supports process optimisation, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives.
How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?
I've always been fascinated by problem-solving and enjoyed crime fiction and investigative stories, which sparked my interest in pursuing a career in forensic science from the laboratory perspective. I realised that I genuinely enjoy working in a laboratory environment, where scientific techniques can be used to uncover evidence and solve complex problems.
When I started exploring universities, my education consultant recommended the University of Strathclyde because of its excellent reputation and the strength of its MSc Forensic Science programme. After researching the course, I was impressed by its practical, hands-on approach, modern laboratory facilities, and strong industry reputation. It felt like the perfect place to develop both my technical skills and my passion for forensic science, so choosing Strathclyde was an easy decision.

What aspects of the programme & your experience at Strathclyde did you find most valuable?
One of the most memorable and valuable aspects of the programme was the crime scene investigation and courtroom simulation. It allowed us to experience the forensic process from beginning to end - examining a crime scene, understanding its context, identifying and collecting potential evidence, analysing that evidence in the laboratory, and finally presenting our findings as expert witnesses in a mock courtroom.
Experiencing the entire journey showed me that forensic science is much more than laboratory analysis. Every stage requires attention to detail, critical thinking, and a clear understanding of how scientific evidence can contribute to an investigation. Stepping into the role of an expert witness was particularly memorable. Although it was a simulation, presenting scientific findings under questioning gave me a real appreciation of the responsibility, professionalism, and composure required when communicating evidence that could influence the outcome of a case. It's an experience that has stayed with me long after graduating.
Another highlight of the course was the opportunity to learn from guest speakers and industry professionals from different areas of forensic science. Listening to experts share their experiences of real investigations, discuss the challenges they faced, and explain how different forensic disciplines work together gave me valuable insights into the profession. Those sessions helped connect what we were learning in the classroom with real-world forensic practice and inspired me by showing the many ways science can contribute to the justice system.
What have you been up to since graduating from your course?
After graduating, I joined Chemify as a Production Chemist. My role involves managing chemical production activities, carrying out quality control checks, maintaining production documentation, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, and helping improve operational efficiency. I have also taken on additional responsibilities as a Quality Coordinator and Problem Solver Lead, supporting documentation control, compliance, and cross-functional collaboration.
How did your university experience help prepare you for your current role?
My time at Strathclyde gave me both the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to transition into industry. The laboratory sessions, research work, and technical reporting prepared me to work accurately in a regulated environment, while group projects and presentations strengthened my communication and teamwork skills. These experiences have helped me adapt quickly to a manufacturing environment where quality, safety, and continuous improvement are essential.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?
I would definitely recommend Strathclyde to anyone interested in pursuing a career in science. The University provides excellent facilities, supportive lecturers, and a learning environment that encourages both academic and personal growth. The practical focus of the programme gave me the confidence and skills to start my professional career immediately after graduating.
