Karyn is a Senior Teaching Fellow within the department.  She was awarded a a BSc Hons in Prosthetics and Orthotics in 1989 from the University of Strathclyde, before going to work as a dual practicing prosthetist/orthotist in Dublin. While in practice, she developed a specific interest in orthotics, and research to inform orthotic clinical practice and device development. She took up an academic position in 1994 at the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics, Department of Biomedical Engineering to facilitate the pursuit of these aspirations to improve patient care.

Karyn's University responsibilities include: Academic advisor for MSc/PgDip/PgCert Prosthetic and/or Orthotic Rehabilitation Studies (distance learning); Convener and vice convener for Departmental Ethics Committee and University Ethics Committee respectively; member of the departmental teaching committee and Faculty complaints investigator.
