Why Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering?

The birthplace of modern engineering education

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is highly rated with a world-class reputation for research and teaching.  With a diverse population of staff and students, the Department welcomes students every year from countries across the globe, including China, India, Thailand, Brazil, Kuwait and Turkey.

The Department

The Department is number one in Scotland and consistently rated in the top 10 such departments in the UK. It has pioneered the use of active learning techniques in the interactive classroom, and innovative approaches to teaching design. Undergraduate MEng students can choose appropriate specialised options from a wide portfolio of classes and have the specialism reflected in their final degree title; these are known as the ‘Mechanical Engineering with...’ degree.

All our courses are professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council. The courses in Aero-Mechanical Engineering are also accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is home to award-winning and internationally recognised research centres spanning:

  • Energy
  • Aerospace
  • Fluids
  • Structures and Materials

Our work is both creating new knowledge and understanding, and translating that new knowledge into the technologies of tomorrow. From understanding the behaviour of fluid flow at nano- scales to mapping trajectories for deep space missions, we are making key research contributions that will underpin our common future. Our research programmes are also delivering new knowledge with societal and industrial impact, from marine turbines for clean energy to lightweight material for efficient transportation.

Extensive Industrial links

The Department has extensive links with the corporate sector as well as a strong commitment to students, while our worldwide alumni include distinguished industrialists and scholars. We have a long and successful history of working with industry partners in a number of areas. Some of our more significant partnerships include hosting the Weir Advanced Research Centre and the BRE Centre of Excellence in Energy Utilisation.

Contact with industry is also maintained through an Industrial Advisory Board which represents major national and local employers, so courses are relevant to employers’ needs. Many of our students secure industrial training placements and some are sponsored.  Graduates have found employment with a numbers of blue chip companies including Weir Group, Shell UK, BP, Ineos and the McLaren Formula 1 team!

Study Abroad

The Department has one of the UK’s largest overseas study programmes, with over 30 top-rank partner universities in Europe and in North America. All courses provide opportunities to undertake an element of study experience in another country, to develop broader experience of professional education, culture and business.

Other Activities

Our students are very active well beyond A high proportion of our students participate in activities, such as the Outdoor Management Skills Course at Outward Bound Scotland, the national competitions for a Formula Student racing car, the British Model Flying Association’s University Challenge, Eco-marathon and the Annual Employers’  Gala Dinner.  The Formula student team is an internationally renowned competition in which students design, build and market a single- seater racing car.  Mechanical Engineering students play an integral part of the team and race the car at Silverstone and across Europe.

A degree in Mechanical Engineering is an international passport to an interesting, challenging and well-rewarded career. The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering is targeted for graduate recruitment by over 60 companies. The main areas of employment are in design and manufacture, research and development, management, project engineering and technical support, sales and marketing. Graduates reach positions of authority and responsibility in the UK and worldwide. The Department is targeted for graduate recruitment by over 60 companies and in recent years, almost all of our graduates have secured employment before or within six months of graduation.
