CEP Researcher appointed to RSE Young Academy of Scotland

Dr Christian Calvillo Munoz, CEP Senior Research Fellow, is among 48 new members appointed to the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (YAS). 

Established by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2011, YAS brings together entrepreneurs, academics, business leaders, teachers and other professionals from across Scotland to work collaboratively for the benefit of society. Members are selected for both their professional achievements and their commitment to public engagement and cross-sector collaboration. 

Dr Calvillo's research focuses on advancing equitable and sustainable energy transitions, work that has directly informed Scottish and UK energy policy. 

Reflecting on the appointment, he said: 

I'm delighted to be joining the Young Academy of Scotland. Building an equitable and sustainable energy transition raises questions that span several intersecting disciplines, so being part of a network with such different backgrounds and sectors is a really valuable opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing how those wider perspectives can shape and strengthen my own research. 

A strong showing for Strathclyde 

Dr Calvillo is one of six University of Strathclyde staff appointed to this year's YAS cohort, reflecting the breadth of research taking place across the University: 

  • Dr Ingeborg Birnie – researching minority languages in education, with a particular focus on Gaelic 
  • Dr Grainne El Mountassir – developing innovative ground improvement technologies using bacteria and fungi 
  • Dr Christian Calvillo Munoz – advancing research on equitable and sustainable energy transitions that inform Scottish and UK policy 
  • Dr Fraser Scott – leading research in anti-infective drug discovery and STEM education
  • Dr Ruaridh Clark – investigating complex systems across biological, technological and social domains 
  • Dr Andrea Tonner – researching consumer inclusion, vulnerability and wellbeing 

 

About the 2026 cohort 

In total, 48 new members joined YAS this year, drawn from business, the public sector, the charity sector, the arts, and research and academia. Six of the new members were appointed through YAS's At-Risk Academic/Refugee (ARAR) membership initiative, which supports outstanding individuals who were refugees or sought asylum in Scotland. New members will join YAS's existing cohort in pursuing its vision of transformative societal change through citizenship, innovation, collaboration, evidence and leadership. 

Dr Caroline Müellenbroich, co-chair of YAS, said:

I am delighted to welcome this incredible group of new members to The Young Academy of Scotland. Each of these individuals brings unique talents and expertise to YAS, and I look forward to seeing them combine their knowledge to create projects which address the many challenges facing Scotland and the world.
