Conference Theme: ‘The Law School as a Place of Useful Learning’

The University of Strathclyde and the Association of Law Teachers invite abstract submissions for the ALT Annual Conference 2025, which is taking place on 10 and 11 April at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

The University of Strathclyde’s origins can be traced back to 1796, when Professor John Anderson left a legacy in his will to create a ‘place of useful learning’ – a core mission that Strathclyde Law School has advanced since its formation in 1964.

With ALT and Strathclyde Law School both celebrating their 60th anniversary year in 2024-25, the conference offers an opportunity to move beyond reflecting on legacy and instead look to the future. In particular, the conference will focus on considering how law schools across the sector can ‘pay it forward’ to ensure that they continue to provide places of useful learning for future generations of students.

We welcome submissions in a variety of formats e.g. traditional presentations, panels, posters, lightning talks and presentations with direct audience participation. In particular, we welcome submissions from Early Career Academics (those for whom it is 3 years or less since either completion of PhD or commencement of full-time academic position).

Whilst submissions can relate to any element of legal education pertaining to the overall theme, we specifically invite submissions on the following:

  • Clinical legal education and other experiential learning opportunities;
  • Inclusive and non-traditional approaches to assessment;
  • Ethical integration of Artificial Intelligence into teaching and assessment;
  • Decolonising and gender-focused approaches to curriculum design;
  • Involving students in curriculum design;
  • Building communities of students and staff;
  • Supporting international students and studying in a 2nd language
  • Transition through degree programmes;
  • Widening access;
  • Meeting the particular challenges faced by part-time and graduate entry students.

Papers accepted and presented at the conference are eligible to be considered for publication in a special symposium edition of the Edinburgh Law Review (a leading Scottish law journal), subject to peer-review – please indicate when submitting an abstract whether you would like to be considered.  We are particularly committed to offering this opportunity up to a number of Early Career Academics.
