Prof Cyrus Tata Chairs European Seminar on Technology in Sentencing & Penal Decision-Making

The Law School’s Prof Cyrus Tata is to chair a two-day European roundtable seminar on the role of technology in sentencing and penal decision-making.

The European roundtable seminar, which is being hosted and sponsored by City Law School in central London, brings together academics and officials from 12 different countries to exchange learning and discuss cutting-edge issues. 

It is held under the auspices of the European Group on Sentencing & Penal Decision-Making, a network of over 120 scholars, policy officials and practitioners from over 25 countries, founded by and is chaired by Prof Tata.

Commenting about the event he said:

Raid technological developments raise urgent and fundamental issues for justice in sentencing and penal decision-making. So this event represents an exciting opportunity to learn about the scholarly, practice and policy issues in a range of different countries.

Papers are being presented on a diverse range of topics including: the use and impacts of virtual court hearings; predictive sentencing and penal decision-making; the challenges and potential of Artificial Intelligence; sentencing guidelines; technology and discretion and human empathy; gender and digital penality.

Prof Tata is programme director of the Law School’s leading Masters in Criminal Justice & Penal Change.
