Sentencing & Guilty Pleas

Prof Cyrus Tata, Jay Gormley and Dr Rachel McPherson (Centre for Law, Crime & Justice) have been commissioned by the Scottish Sentencing Council to review the state of international law and knowledge about reductions in sentence where a person pleads guilty.

Their report to the Scottish Sentencing Council will help to inform the Council's thinking and any possible Sentencing Guideline which may emerge.

Commenting Prof Cyrus Tata said:

The question of reductions in sentence because a person pleads guilty is hotly debated around the world. It begs further questions about principles and practice, and indeed the proper role of sentencing. So we are pleased to be asked by the Scottish Sentencing Council to take this important work forward.
