Strathclyde Law School Academics Contribute to Book on The Legal Challenge of Social Media

Dr Lorna Gillies, Strathclyde Law School and Dr David Mangan, City University of London have recently edited a collection of essays on The Legal Challenges of Social Media, published by Elgar in June 2017 in the Law, Technology and Society Series (General Editor Peter K. Yu, Texas A & M School of Law). Social media enables instant access to individual self-expression and the sharing of information. Social media issues are boundless, permeating distinct legal disciplines. The law has struggled to adapt and for good reason: how does the law regulate this medium over the public/private law divide? The book engages with the legal implications of social media from public and private law perspectives and outlines how the law, in various legal sub-disciplines and with varying success, has endeavoured to adapt existing tools to social media. The book includes a chapter from Lorna Gillies on establishing jurisdiction for cross-border defamation by social media and a chapter from former Strathclyde Law School PhD student Dr Edina Harbinja (University of Hertfordshire) on the ‘Right to Post Mortem Privacy’. A book launch was held at Information Law and Policy Centre, IALS, London on 6 July 2017.
