The WG Hart Workshop 2026 will be held in London at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies Russell Square and is convened in 2026 by Profs. Elaine Fahey, Fabien Terpan and Rebecca Zahn.
The digitalisation of contemporary society is a rapid evolution across all legal systems and all walks of life. It entails the widening of the subjects and objects of regulation and governance and an unprecedented scale of users across cross-cutting legal subjects and systems. It has many profound consequences e.g. digital identities, automation, (de)humanisation, creativity and privacy and it has the potential to disrupt activities and sectors such as retail, media, education, and the travel industry. Digitalisation may enhance knowledge, favour sustainable development, inclusiveness, social equality and the delivery of public services, but it can also have the opposite consequence of increasing inequalities, contributing to climate change, threatening democracy and human rights. Against this backdrop, “responsible digitalisation” has emerged as a concept capable of reconciling technological upheaval with respect for human beings.
The workshop considers the metrics of responsible digitalisation of economies and societies and its human implications from a legal perspective. The geographical focus is on legal developments in the UK, EU and US, which have emerged as significant actors in the debate on responsible digitalisation.
Registration to attend the workshop is now open. Participation (in-person only) is free, but registration is required.
