The enforcement of antitrust policy in the digital market - is the Google Android case a new step in the right direction?
SCALES, in conjunction with Shepherd & Wedderburn, are organising a seminar to be hosted at S & W offices, 1 West Regent Street, Glasgow, G2 1RW on the topic of The enforcement of antitrust policy in the digital market - is the Google Android case a new step in the right direction?, presented by Vasil Stoynov, PHD researcher (see abstract below).
Abstract:
The Commission broke its record for a fine with the latest decision against Google for anticompetitive practices with the Android system. However, the importance of the decision in the case goes beyond as the arguments of the Commission have the potential to show to what degree the settled understanding and practice on the abuse of dominant position can be applied in the digital technology markets. From a broader perspective the approach of the authority could also shape the role of the antitrust policy and rules for the innovation process and can potentially influence the way technology companies do business in Europe. Having something to learn from its experience with other proceedings against USA big tech companies, the Commission has an opportunity to prove that it is fit to provide robust application of antitrust rules in the digital 21st century. To what extend this opportunity will be seized depends not only on the robust arguments and evidence, but also on the genuine understanding of the specifics of the digital economy and the willingness to strike a balance between fostering the innovation and protecting the competition.
