Emma is a graduate from the PGDE Secondary Education: Languages programme at the University of Strathclyde
Tell us a little bit about your background...
Hi! My name is Emma Boyle, and I recently completed the PGDE Secondary Education programme specialising in Modern Languages. I studied Spanish, French and International Business at undergraduate level and have always been passionate about languages, communication, and helping young people thrive. I am now working as a secondary teacher in my probation year at St Peter the Apostle High School in Clydebank teaching Spanish and French, and I am absolutely loving the experience so far!
What drew you towards undertaking this degree?
My passion for languages has always been a huge part of who I am, but it was my time teaching abroad during my undergraduate year in Rouen, France & Madrid, Spain that truly solidified my desire to become a teacher. I loved the connection with pupils, the creativity of planning lessons, and the challenge and joy that came with helping learners succeed. The PGDE felt like the perfect next step toward a career where I could continue sharing that enthusiasm every day.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Strathclyde?
I chose to study at the University of Strathclyde, as it has an outstanding reputation for teacher education and strong partnerships with schools. I was drawn to the programme's balance of academic insight and practical experience, as well as the supportive atmosphere within the School of Education. Strathclyde felt like a place where I could grow professionally, and that proved to be true throughout the year.
Tell us about your experience on placement...
Placement was one of the most transformative parts of my training. I taught French and Spanish across a range of year groups and became deeply involved in the life of the schools I worked in - from attending parents' evenings to supporting senior pupils with assessments. I developed my skills in lesson planning, active learning, differentiation, and behaviour management, and I really enjoyed building positive relationships with learners. The experience gave me the confidence I now bring into my probation year.
What is the academic support at Strathclyde like?
The academic support at Strathclyde was excellent. Lecturers were approachable, encouraging and deeply committed to our development as teachers. The mix of professional studies, subject-specific input, and reflective practice sessions helped me understand both the theory and the reality of effective teaching. I always knew I could reach out for support when I needed it.
What are the facilities at Strathclyde like?
I spent a lot of my time in the Learning & Teaching building, not only for classes, but for studying too. It became one of my favourite places on campus because it was modern, comfortable, and full of great spaces to work in. It was also a brilliant place to socialise with friends between classes, and it really contributed to feeling part of a supportive community during my PGDE year.
What are your hopes for the future?
Now in my probation year, I'm focused on continuing to grow into the most effective and reflective practitioner I can be. I hope to secure a permanent post teaching Spanish and French, and long-term I would love to contribute to a strong, supportive Modern Languages department. Ultimately, I hope to help pupils develop the confidence and curiosity that learning another language can bring.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this course?
If you have a genuine passion for teaching and languages, this course is an excellent pathway. The PGDE is challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Embrace your placements, seek feedback, stay organised, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Most importantly, remember why you want to teach! Your enthusiasm will make all the difference. You will feel support especially from Kandi, she is an incredible member of staff. It was an incredible year I will never forget!
