Tell us a little bit about your background...
I am from The Sultanate of Oman. I came to the UK as a sponsored student from my home country. I completed the BA in Finance, Investment and Risk at Glasgow Caledonian University.
What inspired you to study Diplomacy and International Security (MSc)?
Diplomacy has always been an area of interest to me. I always had the intention of studying diplomacy or international relations during my education journey either at undergraduate or postgraduate level. I was delighted when I saw the MSc in Diplomacy and International Security offered at the University of Strathclyde.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoyed working as a team. I find that this is really important for international students who may be experiencing their first time studying abroad. I enjoyed the group discussions and hearing everyone’s views during the seminars. One of the most enjoyable tasks was to submit ambassador reports for the country you had been assigned. It was interesting to consider all the different ambassador reports each week and discuss world events.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?
My critical and analytical skills have been developed by writing assessments and the dissertation. The class in Research Skills, Sources and Methods was very helpful as I started preparing for my dissertation. We also learnt about presenting in front of an audience and it helped improved my presentation skills.
What do you think of the support available?
Extremely satisfied with the support that the HASS faculty and programme director, Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro provided. Everyone was very aware and understanding of the circumstances that can sometimes affect international students. The coffee and catch-up meetings with Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro were one of the great ways to encourage us during the year.
What advice would you give to a prospective student coming to study your course?
The MSc Diplomacy and International Security provides such a fascinating opportunity to hear from practitioners. We met a number of diplomats in class and online, and it was really interesting to hear from people like Lord Ricketts who was British ambassador to France. They were such beneficial talks!
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
As I mentioned above, studying diplomacy and international security was one of my goals, thus, I am currently applying for internship in international organisations such as the United Nations to advance and improve my experience. In the meantime, I intend to pursue a career in foreign affairs sector.
