Tell us a little bit about your background...

I completed my undergraduate degree in International Relations in Islamabad, where I developed a strong foundation in global politics and diplomacy. My undergraduate thesis focused on environmental politics and diplomacy, an area that sparked my deep interest in how international relations shape global environmental governance. This academic background, combined with a growing interest in diplomacy and security, motivated me to pursue the MSc in Diplomacy and International Security at Strathclyde, where I could further develop my expertise in these areas.

What inspired you to study the MSc Diplomacy & International Security?

The MSc Diplomacy and International Security at Strathclyde stood out because of its specialised modules, which aligned perfectly with my academic interests and career goals. The opportunity to study global security and diplomacy in-depth was especially appealing, and the Commonwealth Scholarship (CSC) made the programme even more attractive by easing financial concerns. The interdisciplinary approach of the course, blending theoretical insights with practical perspectives from leading practitioners, made it an ideal fit for my aspirations in international relations. The programme’s strong academic foundation, combined with the chance to learn from experts in the field, solidified my decision to pursue this degree.

What were the most enjoyable parts of your course?

The most enjoyable aspects of the course were the opportunities to interact with a dedicated and passionate faculty, whose expertise and commitment to student success made the learning experience truly engaging. In addition to the academic rigour, I particularly appreciated the extracurricular events organised by the programme director, Dr Rogelia Pastor-Castro, such as attending sessions hosted by the Scottish Council on Global Affairs and engaging with practitioners in the field. These events provided invaluable insights into real-world diplomacy and international relations. One of the highlights was our tour of Glasgow City Chambers, where we had the chance to engage with local government representatives and gain a practical understanding of political institutions. These experiences, combined with the opportunity to represent the programme as a Student Programme Ambassador, made my time at Strathclyde both enriching and rewarding.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?

The MSc programme at Strathclyde helped me significantly enhance both my written and oral communication skills. Through academic essays, I learned to critically analyse and articulate complex ideas, with valuable feedback from professors that allowed me to improve my work over time. My oral skills were further developed through engaging in class debates and presentations, which gave me the confidence to discuss international issues more effectively. Additionally, the collaborative nature of the programme, with group assignments, strengthened my teamwork abilities and time management skills, as I learned to balance different tasks while meeting deadlines. My role as Student Programme Ambassador also contributed to my skill set, as it provided me with opportunities to lead virtual sessions, present the programme, and manage projects like campus tours and call campaigns, which further honed my communication and leadership abilities.

What do you think of the support available?

The support at Strathclyde is exceptional. Professors were always available to assist with academic queries, and the department staff were attentive to student progress and concerns. I had the benefit of a dedicated supervisor for my MSc dissertation, whose guidance was invaluable in shaping my research. Their feedback helped refine my ideas and ensured I remained on track throughout the process. Additionally, mental health support was prioritised, ensuring a balanced and holistic student experience. The funding provided through the CSC scholarship also counted as significant support, helping ease financial concerns during my studies.

I would strongly encourage prospective students to explore all available funding opportunities, particularly the CSC scholarship, as it offers invaluable financial support. Beyond funding, I recommend actively engaging with professors whenever challenges arise—they are approachable and genuinely committed to supporting your academic journey.
