Choose the right email address
Suitable contact details are a basic but essential part of a successful application. Employers send correspondence via email. So it's important to choose an account that you have access to all year.
Your university email will expire once you graduate. Consider this in your applications and use another address if necessary. Ensure that any email address you use is business-like and does not include any nicknames.
Check your junk folder & spam settings
Up to 80% of emails are spam and so email providers have tightened junk filters. For example, Gmail junk folders need to be reviewed within 30 days. After this, they are deleted. Don't miss an important email.
Alter your junk filter settings to allow emails from the employers you're applying to. Regularly check your emails.
Check any subfolders
Gmail automatically classifies incoming emails into categorised tabs in your inbox. Emails relating to applications may not go to the 'primary' tab, so can be missed.
It's worth checking all tabs. For example, promotions and updates. This is in case an email from an employer ends up in the wrong place. As with junk filter settings, you can alter the classifications. If in doubt, contact the employer if you think you are missing emails.
