ExamsWhat to expect

Exams are one of many types of assessment you may complete while studying.  They are held three times a year at Strathclyde: in December, in April/May and (for resits) in July/August.

The information below has been created to help you understand what to expect during an exam.

Exams are usually not in the same place as you received the teaching for that module. It's important to take some time before the exam to find the building and the room to make sure you can get there on time on the day.

You might have exams in rooms that you were taught in. However, the rooms are arranged for exams by providing single desks for students to sit at or by spreading students out so they are not sat as close as they might be during teaching.

Some exam rooms - for example, for practical exams - may be arranged differently.

Pens: answer books should be completed in ink unless otherwise directed. It's advisable to bring spare pens/pencils as required. Stationery can be carried in a clear transparent pencil case.

Other equipment: check if you need to bring anything specific, such as a calculator, where permitted. Spares will not be available in exams.

Registration number: you will need to write your 9-digit student registration number (e.g. 201234567) to your answer book, so please ensure that you know this number for your exams.

Food & drink: Only water is allowed on your desk in an exam room unless this has been otherwise agreed in advance of the exam as a reasonable adjustment.

Mobile phones, earphones and other electronic devices: are forbidden unless agreed in advance of the exam as a reasonable adjustment. They must be switched off and in your bag.

Fidget toys: are not allowed on your desk in an exam room unless this has been otherwise agreed in advance of the exam as a reasonable adjustment.

Revision notes and study materials: are not allowed on your desk or your person in an exam room unless you have been advised that they are permitted materials for the exam.

The University accepts no liability for possessions that are lost, stolen, or damaged during exams.

You will be let into the exam room approximately ten minutes before the exam is due to start.

You will be asked to put your coat and bag on one side of the exam room and then you will sit down at a desk taking your pen/pencils, photo ID and any other required equipment with you.

Once sat down, complete the slip of paper with your name and reg number.

The invigilators will hand out the exam papers and answer books. You must not open them until an invigilator has announced that the exam has started. You should write your registration number on the answer book while you are waiting for the exam to start.

An invigilator will give some instructions to the whole exam room and then they will announce that the exam has started and you can begin.

It is strongly advised that you leave enough time to go to the toilet before your exam starts.

Once you have sat down in the exam room, there are limits on when you may leave to go to the toilet unless you have a reasonable adjustment permitting otherwise. You may not go to the toilet during the first third of an exam. For example, in a three hour exam, you will not be permitted to go to the toilet in the first hour of the exam. You are also not permitted to go to the toilet during the last 15 minutes of an exam.

If you do need to go to the toilet, raise your hand and an invigilator will come to you. You will be escorted to the toilet and then escorted back to the exam room.

You will not be given additional time to complete your exam.

If you feel ill during an exam, inform an invigilator by raising your hand. They'll get help if necessary.

Your answer book and the register of attendance will be annotated with a brief description of what happened. This will include the time it happened and how for long you were unable to take part in the exam.

If you're unwell but can continue the exam after a short time, the period of time lost will be noted by the invigilator on your answer book.

If you feel your illness impacted your performance in the exam, you need to submit personal circumstances.

If you have a panic attack or mental health crisis during an exam, inform an invigilator by raising your hand. The invigilator will ensure that you are helped.  If an invigilator notices that you are looking distressed, they may approach you and check whether you need assistance.

You may only take movement breaks during a exam if it has been agreed as a reasonable adjustment in advance. This may mean you will take your exam in a separate exam room. Please make contact with your department or the Disability and Wellbeing Service as early as possible to ensure any necessary reasonable adjustments are in place for your exams.

You cannot leave the exam during the first third (for example, in a two hour exam, you cannot leave during the first 40 minutes) or during the last 15 minutes.

Before leaving, you should raise your hand to alert an invigilator and make sure your answer book has been collected before you leave.

Your department will be able to provide support and academic advice.

The Disability and Wellbeing Service has a range of advisers with specialist expertise in disability, health, mental health and counselling. They offer a broad range of support to students with disability, mental health and wellbeing needs.

Strath Union’s Advice Hub is a free and confidential service where students can get information and advice on everything related to personal, financial, housing or academic matters.

If you have a study visa and are concerned about the impact an exam board decision will have on your sponsorship, contact the Visa Compliance Team or the International Student Support Team at infoandadvice@strath.ac.uk.
