Abstract

This seminar will consider recent developments in international climate negotiations and expectations for the Glasgow Climate Change Conference (COP26).

While 2019 saw increasingly pressing calls for more ambitious climate action worldwide, the Madrid Climate Change Conference (COP25) failed to complete work on the so-called Paris Agreement rulebook. This shortcoming leaves important questions unresolved, ahead of COP26, which will take place for the first time in the UK, from 9-19 November 2020.

In Glasgow, Parties to the international climate regime are expected to step up action to reduce emissions and prove that the Paris Agreement’s architecture is delivering.

The seminar will therefore take stock of the state of play at climate negotiations and reflect on the items on the agenda for COP26, as well as on the process of international climate governance more broadly.
