Emerging Leader in Molecular Spectroscopy Award for Strathclyde’s Dr Matthew Baker

We are delighted to report that Dr Matthew Baker, a senior lecturer in chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, has won the Emerging Leader in Molecular Spectroscopy Award for his outstanding achievements as a molecular spectroscopist.

Dr Baker was selected to receive the honour by an independent scientific committee, and will be presented with his award at the SciX 2016 conference in September, where he will also give a plenary lecture.

Dr Baker currently leads interdisciplinary research in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, with the purpose of advancing the real-life application of analytical chemistry in the clinical, biomedical, security and defence fields.

Among his many achievements, has been the pioneering of the use of vibrational spectroscopy for clinical diagnostics.  Dr Baker’s work has enabled the development of an accurate, efficient and clinically applicable method of using vibrational spectroscopy for brain tumour diagnosis.  He is currently expanding this approach using novel light sources to enable rapid, high-throughput imaging.

Baker recently co-formed the UK Clinical Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy (CLIRSPEC) Network.  The charitable organisation, International Society for Clinical Spectroscopy, has since emerged from this, which aims to enable promising vibrational spectroscopy methods to be brought into the clinic.  He has contributed to numerous key papers in the field, co-written an e-book for the Institute of Physics and guest edited three journal issues.  He is also a member of Raman4Clinics, a European consortium focused on the use of Raman spectroscopy in the clinic, and has developed the successful CLIRSPEC Summer School.  The summer school is now in its second year, and further raises the profile and reach of clinical spectroscopy through providing an interdisciplinary education to a broad range of students interested in the field.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Dr Matthew Baker on his fantastic achievements.
