The day will also include a pedagogical talk to share best practices in supporting visually impaired students and provides insights from the recently launched white paper by of the National Association of Disabled Staff Network.

36th Scottish Fluid Mechanics Meeting - Wednesday 24th May 2023
The University of Strathclyde are pleased to be hosting the 36th Scottish Fluid Mechanics Meeting on Wednesday 24th May 2023. Hosted by Conference Chair, Professor Stephen Wilson, the Scottish Fluid Mechanics Meeting (SFMM) is an annual meeting that brings together researchers working in the field of fluid dynamics from Scotland and beyond. The meeting is an informal gathering and contributions from all areas of Fluid Mechanics are welcome.

Honorary Doctorate awarded to Strathclyde Alumnus, Amar Latif
25 years after graduating with a BSc Hons in Mathematics, Statistics and Finance, Strathclyde Alumnus, Amar Latif was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University in June of this year.
Strathclyde Principal, Professor Sir Jim McDonald said: “We are awarding honorary degrees to people who have excelled in their chosen fields and who have made a positive difference throughout their careers. They are ideal exemplars and role models for our students to follow as they embark on their own careers. Their personal and professional qualities have brought them many years of success and we have great pleasure in offering them recognition for this at Strathclyde.”
Dr Latif is the Founder and Director of Traveleyes, a travel company which specialises in helping blind and visually impaired travellers. .

Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA)
Congratulations to two members of our staff who received awards at the Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards on Wednesday.
Dr Penny Davies received an award for Significant and Sustained Contribution and Dr Ainsley Miller received one for Teaching Innovation.

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award received by Professor Majumdar
Congratulations to Professor Apala Majumdar on receiving a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation in Germany, in recognition of her teaching and research. More information can be found here: https://www.humboldt-foundation.de/en/

Dr Joseph Cousins awarded Vernon Harrison Award by BSR in double win for Strathclyde
Dr Joseph Cousins, a former Strathclyde PhD student and current joint Postdoctoral Researcher, has been named as the winner of the Vernon Harrison Award for "most distinguished PhD thesis in Rheology" by the British Society of Rheology. This PhD was jointly supervised by Professor Stephen Wilson and Professor Nigel Mottram.
This, along with Professor Wilson's BSR Award, marks a double win for the University of Strathclyde. Dr Cousins and Professor Wilson will give a joint presentation at the BSR meeting in December. Dr Cousins also received the British Liquid Crystal Society Young Scientist Prize earlier this year.

Congratulations to Professor Stephen Wilson on receiving BSR Annual Award 2022
The British Society of Rheology has awarded Professor Stephen Wilson their BSR Annual Award for 2022 in recognition of his ground-breaking contributions to liquid crystals, thixotropic fluids and thin-film flow.
Professor Wilson will be presented with the award and will give a lecture on his work at the forthcoming BSR meeting in December.

Strathclyde Researchers awarded ECOWINGS project funding
Professor Mike Heath, Dr Douglas Speirs and Dr Neil Banas of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Strathclyde, in collaboration with other partners, have been awarded funding by ECOWind for the ECOWINGS project.
This project will look at offshore wind in the North Sea and the effect on seabirds.

PhD Mathematics & Statistics student Nathan Burns has been awarded the first Bennett PhD Scholarship at the University of Strathclyde.

Meet Dr Jon Devlin, Outreach Officer
As the Outreach Officer for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Jon delivers outreach workshops at Primary and Secondary schools to showcase the importance and real-life applications of Mathematics and Statistics.
The aim of this work is to encourage students to study a Science subject at University, particularly Mathematics and Statistics.
Jon also co-ordinates the Strathclyde Science Scouts Programme and organises and leads a timetable of events for Maths Week Scotland

Dr Jon Devlin, Teaching Associate and Outreach Officer, joined our other Mathematics and Statistics graduates at the summer graduation ceremonies in June 2022 and was awarded his PhD in Mathematics.

Congratulations to Professor Apala Majumdar who has been awarded a Distinguished Kirk Fellowship by the Isaac Newton Institute (Cambridge) for her programme on 'Uncertainty quantification and stochastic modelling of materials' during the summer of 2023.

Professor Apala Majumdar appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is proud to announce that Professor Apala Majumdar has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). The research undertaken by Professor Majumdar (Associate Dean International Research), focuses on the mathematics and modelling of liquid crystals and partially ordered materials, including their applications in industry. She has also been awarded a Distinguished Kirk Fellowship by the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge and a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation.
