In addition to your physics research, a postgraduate research degree in physics offers you training in a range of technical and core skills relevant to your work. Postgraduate students belong to the SUPA Graduate School and are also enrolled in the University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Professional Development (PgCert RPD).
Students choose from the courses offered by the SUPA Graduate School and take at least 40 hours of technical SUPA classes in their first two years. Students can also choose advanced undergraduate courses in the Department or in other departments in the University. Each student's programme of courses is agreed by the student, their supervisor and the Postgraduate Course Director.
Research courses contain a strong element of transferable skills training, attendance at outreach activities, and participation in graduate schools. PhD students undertake at least 20 hours of general skills training in their first two years.
